Chapter 2: We Can Do it, and We Will Do it
Learning Motivation
Before we start our lesson today. I will give you some motivation why we must learn about the lesson. In the world, everyone has different abilities. Besides, everyone has a different willingness too. There will be times when are asked to do something by someone else. What do you say if you will and are able to do that? Then, what do you say if you are unable or unwilling to do that?
In English, we recognize various expressions. These expressions are commonly used in daily conversation. Many types of expressions in English. One of them is an expression about showing will and unwillingness.
And then in this chapter, we will learn about those expressions to improve your English skill. So, study this chapter seriously! Okay?!
A. EXPRESSING ABILITY AND INABILITY
Last week we learn about expression of ability and inability. It means that expression ability is if someone or yourself has the ability to do something. Meanwhile expression inability is if someone or yourself has unwilling to do something.
To expressing that, we will use 'can' (present tense) and 'could' (past tense from can) as a auxiliary verb (kata kerja bantu).
1. Auxiliary verb 'Can' and 'Could' in expressing ability, inability and asking for ability
a) Auxiliary 'Can', with the structure:
(+) S + can +V1 => Example: He can play tennis.
(-) S + can + not + V1 => Example: He can not play tennis.
(?) Can + S + V1 => Example: Can you play tennis?
b) Auxiliary 'Could', with the structure:
(+) S + could + V1 => Example: I could do my homework.
(-) S + could + not + V1 => Example: I could not do my homework.
(?) Could + S + V1 => Example: Could you do your homework?
2. 'Be Able To' in expressing ability, inability and asking for ability
a) 'Be able to' as present tense, with the structure:
(+) S + be able to + V1 => Example: He is able to play tennis.
(-) S + be + not + able to + V1 => Example: He is not able to play tennis.
(?) Be + S + able to + V1? => Example: Are you able to play tennis?
b) 'Be able to' as past tense, with the structure:
(+) S + was/were + able to + V1 => Example: I was able to do my homework.
(-) S + was/were + not + able to + V1 => Example: I was not able to do my homework.
(?) Was/were + S + able to + V1? => Example: Were you able to do your homework?

B. EXPRESSING WILLINGNESS AND UNWILLINGNESS
Today we will learn about expressions of willingness and unwillingness that someone or yourself
asked to do something by someone else.
To expressing that, we will use 'will' (present tense) and 'would' (past tense from will) as a talk about the future.
1. 'Will' and 'Would' in expressing willingness and unwillingness
a) 'Will' as a present tense, with the structure:
(+) S + will + V1 => Example: I will go to the theater.
(-) S + will + not + V1 => Example: I will not go to the theater.
(?) Will + S + V1? => Example: Will you go to the theater?
b) 'Won't' as a past tense, with the structure:
(+) S + would + V1 => Example: I would be an actor.
(-) S + would + not + V1 => Example: I would not be an actor.
(?) Would + S + V1? => Example: Would you be an actor?
